Old North Church

“One if by land, and two if by sea!” With two lanterns shining from its steeple on April 18, 1775, Old North Church lit the way for the American Revolution — sending a coded warning from Paul Revere that British troops were headed to Lexington and Concord. Experience 300 years of history at Boston’s oldest surviving church building.

Explore the award-winning history exhibit in the church’s sanctuary, discover fascinating secrets and stories with audio tours for adults and children, and enjoy a fun scavenger hunt for the whole family. Discover the crypt, where 1,100 people were laid to rest; tour the bell chamber, where Paul Revere rang bells as a teenager; and see the balcony, where Black and Indigenous congregants once sat. Old North’s campus is also home to Ye Olde Pepper Candy Pantry, a sweet shop from America’s oldest candy company, and Two Lanterns: Gifts at Old North Church.

On a self guided tour of Old North’s crypt, you will learn about burial practices of early congregants, meet some of the notable crypt "occupants" who have rested in this unique space for hundreds of years, and learn about discoveries from recent archaeological work.

Ye Olde Pepper Candy Pantry

Something sweet has arrived on Old North’s campus! Ye Olde Pepper Candy Companie has opened a shop in the 1715 Clough House, a historic brick building located behind Old North Church at 21 Unity Street, Boston. Founded in Salem, MA, in 1806, Ye Olde Pepper Candy Companie is the oldest candy company in America. The company’s signature candies, the Salem Gibralter and the Black Jack, are recognized as the first candies ever sold commercially in the United States. Ye Olde Pepper Candy Pantry is right across the hall from a free history exhibit about childhood in the North End.
